The Hyundai Tournament of Champions kicks off 2016 for the PGA TOUR on the Plantation Course at Kapalua. As a reminder, you can now find my preview and player breakdowns at rotoworld.com in my weekly feature article, normally publishing on Tuesdays. My Yahoo! and Golf Channel selection can be found on Playing the Tips at Rotoworld in a feature written by Josh Culp.
As for this week's one-and-done, strategy comes into play. For starters, in a limited field with a no-cut event, everyone cashes that finishes.
While Jordan Spieth and Jason Day both stand excellent chances to win, this isn't the time to play them. Consider the opportunity cost. If you pick Spieth and he wins, but the guy you would have picked second finishes T7, you won't have gained as much as if you put Spieth on a win in a major or WGC versus your second best option missing the cut. Of course, if you could be 100% certain he was going to win, you would play him. And if Spieth finishes in a three-way tie for third and your second best pick is solo sixth, you've wasted a pick.
My one-and-done this week offers both excellent form and legit course history. That is Patrick Reed. he's been tearing it up across the globe and is the defending champion. I would happily take a top-five finishes with Reed and move on to the Sony Open.
Best of luck to all!
